Lucas's parents are serving a mission in Halifax, Nova Scotia. We went to visit them in July. I was really nervous flying with 4 young kids so we picked the flight that only had 1 lay over. I thought that would be manageable. It would take 3 hours to fly to Detroit and then we would have a 3 hour layover and then it would take 3 hours to fly to Halifax. Well that's not that way it ended up working...

We made it to Detroit! We had a few melt downs, but other than that it went smoothly.
We liked walking through the tunnel of color at the airport. It was even set to music!
We boarded the plane to fly to Halifax and got all the kids settled. Noah and Abby even fell asleep before we took off. We were thinking this was going to be the easiest flight ever.
And then everything changed. We were on our way to the runway when the pilot said we couldn't land in Halifax because it was too foggy so the flight was cancelled. What? Our perfect day wasn't perfect anymore.
When we got off the plane Lucas ran with everyone else that was on our plane down to the ticket counter to see what other tickets we could get. It was already 9:00 at night and it didn't look good. The next day was the 4th of July so they didn't have as many flights and there was also a hurricane hitting the east coast so a lot of those flights were cancelled. What were we going to do with 4 little kids?
Thankfully, one of the airport workers took pity on me. She could tell I was a little frazzled. They usually don't help you if the flight was cancelled due to weather, but she said she would get us a hotel. I was so thankful to her. We got our tickets. This was a Thursday and we couldn't leave until Saturday. That was ok. We would make the best of it and spend the 4th of July in Detroit.
Our hotel had a pool so our kids spent a lot of time swimming to kill the time.
I had only packed enough diapers to get us through the first day. We were staying at a hotel right by the airport and the Detroit Airport is in the middle of nowhere. I had no idea where we were going to buy diapers. The hotel sold them for $5 each. Well I have two kids in diapers so that wasn't going to work. Luckily I met a nice lady at the pool and she said her son could go to the store to buy us diapers. I was so grateful that she offered to do that.
The rest of the time was spent wandering through the hotel. Caden and Lucas got in a good game of pool which was fun. Pretty exciting! Also, we had some of the best pizza ever delivered to our hotel. It was quite the feast.
On Saturday we were supposed to fly from Detroit to Toronto and then Toronto to Halifax. On Friday night Lucas got a call saying our flight from Toronto to Halifax had been cancelled. Really?! I guess the hurricane that was hitting the east coast was now hitting Nova Scotia and they were cancelling all the flights there.
Lucas was on the phone with Delta from about midnight to almost 4 am the next morning. At one point the agent even said that we might have to go back to Salt Lake and wait it out for a couple of days. That was definitely not an option with four kids! Eventually we were able to get booked on a flight, but not without many headaches including Delta booking us on a flight that they knew was canceled...argh!
Now we were going to have to stay in Toronto and fly to Halifax on Sunday. We were not having very good luck. I kept telling myself that I would laugh about this later. The airport workers in Toronto were very nice to us too and booked us a hotel that was connected to the airport. I am so grateful for all the nice people that helped us along the way. It was neat to see that even though we were definitely having some struggles that Heavenly Father was watching over us and putting people in our paths that were more than willing to help in anyway that they could. Just some more tender mercies of the Lord.
